ESPN NEWS: Oklahoma Unveils Statue and $5 Million Tribute to Sooner Softball Icon Patty Gasso’s Legendary Legacy and Unmatched Impact

In a moment that brought cheers, tears, and heartfelt reflection, the University of Oklahoma unveiled a bronze statue in honor of legendary softball coach Patty Gasso, alongside a $5 million tribute fund to support the future of Sooner softball. The ceremony, held just outside the newly expanded Love’s Field in Norman, was more than a celebration — it was a recognition of a legacy that transcends trophies.

For over three decades, Patty Gasso has been the heart and soul of Oklahoma softball. With seven national championships, countless conference titles, and hundreds of lives touched, she has transformed the program into a national powerhouse. But through it all, Gasso has remained famously humble. When asked about the statue, she responded with a simple sentiment:

> “I never wanted a statue. The work was never about me.”

Yet the university — and an adoring fan base — believed otherwise.

A Statue Built on Legacy

The statue, cast in bronze and positioned with a view of the Sooner softball diamond, depicts Gasso in her signature coaching stance — arms folded, eyes focused, calm but commanding. It’s a pose familiar to every Sooner fan, a symbol of leadership that led Oklahoma to a dynasty unlike any other in college softball history.

The unveiling was attended by former players, university officials, and thousands of fans, many of whom wore jerseys with “GASSO” across the back. The crowd erupted as the cover came off the statue, revealing a permanent tribute to a woman whose influence spans generations.

A Gift That Keeps Giving: $5 Million Legacy Fund

In addition to the statue, the University of Oklahoma announced the establishment of the Patty Gasso Legacy Fund, seeded with an initial $5 million. The fund will support scholarships, facilities, player development, and leadership programs for Sooner softball athletes.

University President Joseph Harroz Jr. praised Gasso not only for her championship pedigree but for her integrity and transformative impact on women’s sports.

> “Coach Gasso gave us more than victories. She gave us a standard. She showed us how love, grit, and greatness can live in one person.”

More Than a Coach

Patty Gasso’s coaching philosophy has always centered on faith, family, discipline, and character. Her players speak of her not just as a coach, but as a mentor and life-changer. Dozens have gone on to play professionally or coach themselves, many crediting Gasso’s unwavering belief in their potential.

Former All-American Lauren Chamberlain summed it up best:

> “She saw greatness in us before we saw it in ourselves. That statue is all of us. It’s her, but it’s also what she built in each of us.”

A Legacy Cast in Bronze

In sports, statues are reserved for the rarest of figures — those whose achievements are matched only by their impact. Patty Gasso never asked for one, but she earned it in every way. Now, cast in bronze and surrounded by the program she built, her legacy will stand tall for generations to come.

Because greatness, when built on love and purpose, deserves to be remembered — forever.
